Cage The Elephant – Cigarette Daydreams lyrics
Did you stand there all alone?
Oh I cannot explain what's going down
I can see you standing next to me
In and out somewhere else right now
You sigh
look away
I can see it clear as day
Close your eyes so afraid
Hide behind that baby face
You can
drive all night
Looking for answers in the pouring rain
You wanna find peace of mind
Looking for the answer
Funny how it
seems like yesterday
As I recall you were looking out of place
Gathered up your things and slipped away
No time at all I followed you into the hall
Cigarette Daydream
You were only seventeen
Soft
speak with a mean streak
Nearly brought me to my knees

X2
(You can drive all night
Looking for the answers in the pouring rain
You wanna find peace of mind
Looking for the answer
If we could find a reason, a reason to change
Looking for the answer
If you could find a reason, a reason to say
Standing in the pouring rain)

Its about how the narrator is fighting with their lover and they left the narrator, I'm assuming their in an apartment, down the hall and left. The narrator is hopeing their lover just needs time to think. They had a fight about something that happened in the past. Also if you listen to the other songs on this amazing album it all ties together. The album seems like a guy having regret for something he did in the past and wishes he can take it back. This band reminds me a lot like Nirvana.

I agree a lot with the first two posts. The singer is smoking a cigarette and remembering his girlfriend he had when he was seventeen. The "cigarette daydream" refers to the nostalgic feeling he's feeling as he's smoking his cigarette and "how it seems like yesterday", as the first post talks about. The story is about the singer and his girlfriend that he loved and she's about to leave him in the apartment that they shared on a stormy, rainy night, as the second post says. Something happened in her life and she needs to leave him to go "find the answers in the pouring rain", but he loves her so much and follows her down the hall. He follows her outside and she gets in her car and drives away, leaving him standing alone in the rain. Just my thoughts.

I interperet tho to be a man looking back on a past relationship thinking about how it failed and how painful it seemed at the time. "Funny how it seems like yesterday, as I recall..." Cigarette daydreams kind of evokes that nostalgic kind of sad feeling -- musing over the past over a cigarette. It's a very powerful song in my opinion and about a couple that split up because of differences in their lifestyles -- the girl is obviously missing something in her life and "looking for the answers" so she leaves.

I think it's about the singer's love for a girl who came from a bad past. She's sweet with a mean streak. Her past haunts her. She's there with the singer, but not totally because she is struggling with abuse as a child. She can't totally feel loved until she let's her past go. She is searching for the answers and the scene (in the video) of her starting herself on fire in the trunk represents her letting go of her past. Not suicide because in the end she's standing by the singer who truly loves her.

I don't think she commits suicide, I think that is just her old self simple on the farm and she kills off that dream to be the well dressed wife/GF of a rock star or on his way to being that since it's about his wife. She had second thoughts of that lifestyle being alone while he tours etc but I think he wouldn't let it go, so they could make it work. Cant stop listening to this song.

He wants her to Stay with him in the pouring rain and the pouring rain may be a metaphor for the life of becoming a rock star till you make it big, just adding this thought to my "I don't think she commits suicide..." post above.

When watching the video and listening to the song I feel it is all about that one girl. It shows her young and older and her happiness and confusion and sadness. At the end it looks like it is her tied up in the trunk of her car. She Sets It On fire. Committing Suicide.

Yeah, he's remembering somebody he used to know, that got hurt. The sinister hurt, and she was only 17, but it changed her, tore her apart. The fact that she shows up in two different looks shows her struggle between the victim and the hard road surviver with herself. All victims have to choose if what happened to them defines who they are, if they allow the hurt one in them that's hurt to rule who they are. Sooner or later we all choose to kill a part of ourselves to move on and learn to be who we always were meant to be. He remembers and remains her how she was before the hurt happened, shows her he saw the change in her, and convinces her to kill the part in her that hurts the rest of her. She decides to move on. Hence one persons kills the other by her own hand. Cigarette daydreams; it means dreams that will just go up in smoke.

I feel like this song is about either a miscarraige or abortion. How she "stood there all alone" in line at the clinic and he's freaking out "I can't explain what's going down." She's meandering about the choice she has or what had happened by driving in the rain looking for her answers. They fought about the idea. She left with a little of her possessions in the room, and he chased after her into the hall telling her to maybe calm down and he was there for her. They were in high school so they were really young for this life changing decision.

I believe they are still in high school. She's a little awkward and out of place and doesn't fit in with the popular crowd. He follows her into the hall and finds out she is so unique she brings him to his knees. She is troubled though and can't survive in this world and kills herself. He is forever changed by her, will always love her and want her to come back. Every time he smells a cigarette he thinks of her and mourns the loss of her.

    Cigarette = meaning addictive daydreams.
This guy is addicted to this girl who isn't sure if she's in love with him or not. Even though they feel it "clear as day" she's a free sprit who doesn't seem to be tied down. Hide behind that baby face I'm guessing is that she lives an adventurous life, one that she is probably to young for. The answer she is looking for is if she truly loves him. Because like all great loves she has confusion she doesn't want to but the feeling is so strong, she doesn't know if she wants to stay with him or move on to better things in life. She chooses to leave but she's not good with saying goodbyes so she try's to just leave. She leaves and he is obviously still thinking about her going on about his "addictive daydream".

The lead singer wrote it about a girl he saw in the crowd at one of his concerts who eventually became his wife. He jumped off stage when he saw her and demanded a kiss. She said no but they started dating. I think its just about her and her past and their story (im pretty sure shes french ie cigarettes and stuff).
