Coldplay – Violet Hill lyrics
Was a long and dark December
From the rooftops I remember
There was snow
White snow

Clearly I remember
From the windows they were watching
While we froze down below

When the future's architectured
By a carnival of idiots on show
You'd better lie low

If you love me
Won't you let me know?

Was a long and dark December
When the banks became cathedrals
And the fog
Became God

Priests clutched onto bibles
And went out to fit their rifles
And the cross was held aloft

Bury me in honor
When I'm dead and hit the ground
A love back home unfolds

If you love me
Won't you let me know?

I don't want to be a soldier
With the captain of some sinking ship
With snow, far below

So if you love me
Why'd you let me go?

I took my love down to violet hill
There we sat in snow
All that time she was silent still

So if you love me
Won't you let me know?

If you love me,
Won't you let me know?

This song sounds like it's about how he is in love with this girl, and if she doesn't love him, he's going to go be in the military or something; "i dont want to be a soldier" "so if you love me why'd you let me go?" he just wants to know if she loves him. Plus it's winter, which sort of changes the way you feel when you hear the song, knowing that whats happening is going on in the winter.

To understand this song I took it apart. The part about the future being architecture by idiots I could actually relate to today because it's like you have a bunch of famous people being idiots and setting a bad example for the future and so you should "lie low". But it also relates to the past when people in europe not thinking for themselves and being controlled by the catholic church. And the part about the banks becoming cathedrals is about how the church made tithes a tax that had to be paid. Also the fog becoming god is saying that the people were confused by the churches' demands but it was claimed to be the will of god so people believed it. Religion was the fuel of almost every fire and that's why it says the cross was held aloft.

Viva la Vida and this song run in tandem - they are instrumentally together on the album. What a lot of people forget is the deep and fundamental part war and religion (together) has played in Europe's history. The Thirty Years War is a great example. I think this is Coldplay's way of poetically and ironically combining religion and war as has hapened into great songs! You must have the two songs as a pair. Remember that!

This song could mean a lot of different things, but in all essance of course it involves a couple, and one of em has the army in their path which sounds like this story coulda took plas in the 40's or even 30's. The couple is in love and just want the other one 2 let him know. She didn't tell him, he went to war and then he say "if you love me, why'd you let me go". And "Violet Hill is an actually place. And he askes her while there "if you love me won't you let me know.

I think the meaning of this song is that a guy and his girlfriend are in a low-populated city and are being watched by people. You tend to wonder what the meaning of the song is when you hear him talking about how he remembered the snow from the rooftops; you ask yourself why he would be on the rooftops. There are proably enemy snipers, I'd assume, because he says they were watching them from the windows. In the end, when they're sitting together on violet hill, he wants to know if his girlfriend loves him, but she still won't talk.
When he says "bury me in honor, when i'm dead i'll hit the ground, a love backhome it unfolds", I think it means that once he days in the battle, she'll then realize, back home, that she loved him, and will regret saying nothing to him.
I believe that "cobaltshadow", someone who posted another comment about this song, was right when he talked about the feeling that the winter setting gives you. It gives you more of a picture in your mind of a battle scene; people hiding in the snow.
When the singer talks about the prists clutching their bibles, hollowed out to fit their rifles, he probably is talking about how desprate people are to stay alive; that even the priests are fighting. In the end, the man is still confused, because his love won't tell him if she loved him.

I have to agree with blackrose537. Amanda57 says some pretty scarey things, and I'm not quite sure that's what coldplay had in mind when this song was written, but she has some valid points. All I know is that this is a beautiful song, about lost love and lost hope and snow. White snow. Snow is peaceful, and so is this song, if you don't think about world war iii and the last day of the world and corrupt priests when you listen to it.
    I didn't. Now I prolly will.

Well, it is certainly inspired by European reformation. But there is a place called violet hill in Hong Kong which wz d site of War of Hong Kong btwn Brits & Japs whch bgan on 8 Dec 1941 & ended on christmas day & it wz snowing then. So this might hv set tone fr religious implications in the song. Also bout Banks=cathedrals. Brits lost the war coz they bcame bankrupt though they did collect funds by making d preists persuade people 2 donate(& join the army). And capt of sum sinkin ship. Brits wer predicted 2 los b4 the war even startd(Hk wz ill prepared for battle).

This song is about a young man who is sent off to war and does not understand why his country has done this. If his country loves him. Why did it send him to war. His country has sent him to a war created by idiots for the sake of commerce and religion and only his dying brings his countries love. He did not want to be a part of the cold landscape of war he only wanted to be loved.

He leaves for war and "A love back home unfolds" between his love and another person. He dies in battle and asks her why she "lets him go" This either means why did she let him go to war or why did she let their relationship and him die after he left. She kills herself and they are both burried on Violet Hill where they "sat in snow"
Or she is still in America and they both die. Him in war and her out of misery right after he left. He never hears that she loves him because she never sends letters due to her death. At the end he takes his love to a cemetary and "she was silent still" they sat in the snow, meaning they were dead.
