Manfred Mann's Earth Band – Blinded By The Light lyrics
Madman drummers bummers
Indians in the summer
With a teenage diplomat

In the dumps with the mumps
As the adolescent pumps
His way into his hat
With a boulder on my shoulder
Feeling kinda older
I tripped a merry-go-round
With this very unpleasing
Sneezing and wheezing
The calliope crashed to the ground

Blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce
Another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
She got down but she never got tight
She's gonna make it through the night

Some silicone sister
With her manager mister
Told me i've got what it takes
She said i'll turn you on sonny to
Something strong
Play the song with the funky break

And go-kart mozart
Was checking out the weather chart
To see if it was safe outside
And little early pearly
Came by in her curly wurly
And asked me if i needed a ride

Mama always told me not to look into
The eyes of the sun
But mama that's where the fun is

Some brimstone baritone
Anticyclone rolling stone
Preacher from the east
Says dethrone the dictaphone
Hit it in it's funnybone
That's where they expect it least
And some new mown chaperone
Was standing in the corner
Watching the young girls dance
And some fresh-sewn moonstone
Was messin' with his frozen zone
Reminding him of romance

It starts off with him getting lucky in the park with a call girl, as he pumps his way into his hat (condom) or so he thought. Until it hit the ground, then it became apparent that it had come off.
The boulder on the shoulder is a reference to him coping a feel, "over the shoulder boulder holder" is another name for a bra.
He saw the light when a cop car pulled up (spot light), tripped over the merry-go-round as he was making a break for it, (that's where the running like an Indian comes into play) cuz he was wearing his native suit. Him getting the sneezing and wheezing was cuz he caught the gonna-a-syphilis from the hooker he was getting freaky with. The silicone sister and her manager mister (pimp) were now also looking for him, so he's running again. The curly wurly is his mustache as he got a jolt from the early perly (aka bugger sugar) and with that he was ready to ride the lightning. The following stanza is where he's in the doctors room getting his check up, blinded by the doctors light, hit in the funny bone, his escapades have landed him here, where the fun's at. And him catching an STD, is made apparent when he sees the girls dancing on the corner he gets a quick reminder of the cold moonstone (cuz he had just got a penicillin shot to the butt) which, if you were in the military you got in boot camp, or in his case from the gonna-a-syphilis, it definitely feels like a cold stone on your moon.
In the service, we called it a peanut butter shot, cuz it feels like a big cold blob of pb in your butt check, which brings us back to the beginning. The madmen being a foreshadowing for the syphilis, cuz if left untreated will make you go mad, like Howard Hughes, and the drummers bummers (or the drips mips form the gonna-a-syphilis), well you get it. Case closed - you're welcome :).

I honestly don't know the meaning, but it brings back great memories. In the mid eighties I was running from an extremely abusive marriage. It was only one of three albums that I owned (yes I said album) that I was able to get away with. Later when I played it and sang it, I felt free. Free from him! Everytime I hear it I go back in time and feel that freedom again!

The lyricist was resorting to referential treatment and seems to be having a ball. Note the wide array of references being used like Mozart, Calliope, weather chart, etc. Also he used a multiple of words rhyming with one in one of the stanzas. Now, Subject matter will matter less than the kaleidoscopic method used. Like Roger Ebert said " It's not what it's about, It's how it's about it. It goes without saying that Michael Stipe will go work in similar fashion.

If any of you ever suffered from a horrible drug addiction, this song hits the nail on the head, dead on.
When he refers to revved up like a duece, I take it to be, on a cocaine binge. Another runner in the night.
Is exactly what you do all night long, run, run, run. As much as I love.
Bruce, thank god for the remake, because Bruce's version sucks.

At least I know they don't say wrapped up like a douche. Revved up like DEUCE and a quarter. Who can afford to put gas into one of those guzzlers. Any song that sends a mixed message has got to be about shooting smack or something. Getting AIDS off a hooker. That sounds like Springsteen rolling down main street with a child in his lap talking about glory days to me too. Odd the Springsteen did the original. I didn't even know he was around in the '70s unreal. My bad.

Ok, well if he is reffering to "duce"(leader or dictator), which the pronunciation in the song suggests, (as opposed to deuce), I would assume some spiritual/heightened sensory awakening, possibly & probably induced by heavy drug use, that revs the brain to a perceived higher level of thinking & consequentially, strategic and more efficient control/use of the body. I tie this meaning to the repeating 3 verses, I assume that the entire song follows trend, however, that being said there are multiple meanings that could be derived from that school of thought.

The lyrics make several references to; the loss of, if not the taking of innocence. The introduction to s** drugs and rock and roll. Supposedly, the fcc or the record contract demanded that there be changes to the lyrics replacing "With a man whose gisim missed her" into an alternate "with a manager mister". The lines mentioning "Rev'ved up like a deuce" is a reference to the coupe sports car. And possibly the reckless abandon in the loss of James Dean(speculative at best).
