Soundgarden – Fell On Black Days lyrics
What'soever I've feared
Has come to life
And what'soever I've fought off
Became my life.

Just when everyday
Seemed to greet me with a smile
Sunspots have faded
And now I'm doing time
Now I'm doing time

'Cause I fell on black days
I fell on black days (Black days)

Whomsoever I've cured
I've sickened now
And whomsoever I've cradled
I've put you down

I'm a search light soul
They say
But I can't see it
In the night
I'm only faking when I get it right
When I get it right

'Cause I fell on black days
I fell on black days

How would I know
That this could be my fate?
How would I know
That this could be my fate?

[Bridge:]

To what you wanted to see good
Has made you blind
And what you wanted to be yours
Has made it mine

So don't you lock up something
That you wanted to see fly
Hands are for shaking
No, not tying

No, not tying

I sure don't mind a change
I sure don't mind a change
Yeah, I sure don't mind
I sure don't mind a change

I sure don't mind a change

'Cause I fell on black days
I fell on black days (Black days)

How would I know
That this could be my fate?
How would I know
That this could be my fate?
How would I know
That this could be my fate?
How would I know
That this could be my fate?

I sure don't mind a change...

This song captures extreme depression, fear of social interaction, alcohol abuse, and drug addiction. There's a difference between a "depressing" song and a song that entails the darkest corner of earth that any human mind can possibly go. A depressing song is something like "Everybody Hurts" by REM. Fell on Black Days is a different song entirely. The three main reasons I think this is talking about the angst of depression, fear of social interaction, alcohol abuse, and drug addiction is that it all brings you to a point in life that you question everything.
    A) You question whether you are doing any good in you life.
    B) Comparing and contrasting a seemingly successful, functional and happy lifestyle to one that is absolutely decadent and full of agony.
    C) Questioning how it differs being in a state of depression and addicted is to being sober full time. Being depressed or addicted to "hard drug" is emotionally and mentally taxing on a persons thinking and feelings, the way Chris describes "not seeing the light" and compares that to being "black" which echoes this theory. Also keep in mind extreme depression and drug addiction typically effects everybody around you especially the people you know which is also something Chris describes in this song. I can't say for sure but I think this is a personal song from Chris's point of view, of who he was affecting and how. Chris also saying "I sure don't mind a change", saying he wanted to change but unsure how to go about it, and unsure if those in his life would still be there at the end of it all. I think this song is not only personal, but paints a vivid picture to everyone that hears it what kind of complexities that surrounds his life.
