Yael Naim – New Soul lyrics
I'm a new soul
I came to this strange world
Hoping I could learn a bit 'bout how to give and take

But since I came here, felt the joy and the fear
Finding myself making every possible mistake

La, la, la, la (21x)
La, la, la, la (21x)

See I'm a young soul in this very strange world
Hoping I could learn a bit 'bout what is true and fake
But why all this hate? try to communicate
Finding trust and love is not always easy to make

La, la, la, la (21x)
La, la, la, la (21x)

This is a happy end
Cause you don't understand
Everything you have done
Why's everything so wrong

This is a happy end
Come and give me your hand
I'll take you far away

I'm a new soul
I came to this strange world
Hoping I could learn a bit 'bout how to give and take
But since I came here, felt the joy and the fear
Finding myself making every possible mistake

New soul... (la, la, la, la,...)
In this very strange world...
Every possible mistake
Possible mistake
Every possible mistake
Mistakes, mistakes, mistakes...

"This is a happy end, 'coz you don't understand". This particular line of the song strikes a lot. Life is full of "downs" than "ups". Life must still be happy and vibrant when one doesn't seem to understand. It's an opportunity for us to continue proving ourselves more. "This is a happy end, come and give me your hand, I'll take you far away". This is a triumphant moment for us to take the people around us in knowing their worth and together we could all realize that we are all new souls hoping to learn a bit but how to give and take.

"I'm a new soul" as opposed to an "old soul". If you've ever heard the term old soul, someone who is very wise/ a soul that has been here before, (reincarnation) then you'd understand that it is inconsequential/inevitable for new souls to make every possible mistake, as they are not yet old souls and this song captures the feeling of an innocent new soul stumbiling about in this strange world.

I think it's about how when we're younger we're so happy and carefree, but when grow up we see that the world isn't as perfect as it seems and we have come to this world to learn, but all the world teachs us is to hate. So, like a child opening their eyes (what she means by new soul), she is wondering "Why all this hate?" and why don't people understand life doesn't to be perfect to be, well, perfect. So she's making "every possible mistake" because she's not used to all this hate. And she thinks that our world is "very strange" because, once again, she's not used to it.

I give Yael Naim a lot of credit for this song. I was actually looking for it for about an hour and I finally found it. I enjoy it because its catchy and there is a positive lesson to be learned here. I think that she is an immigrant moving to a new place, being too giving and trusting but making the mistake of trusting and giving to the wrong people "trying to learn a bit about what is real and fake." She is a loving and caring person in a country full of dirty sharks. At least this is my interpretation. She is definately a new soul in this world!

I hate to say this but I think this is a song about depression and suicide.
We've always heard about people being "old souls", reincarnated many times and having much wisdom beyond their years. I think a "new soul" would be a fledging arriving on earth to find that all her attempts to find a place in life turn out a "mistake (mistake, mistake)". So she hears a voice saying "come and give me your hand - I'll take you far away" (from this strrange land, this pain of life). And she claims it's not sad way to go, "this is a happy end", going back to be reborn again.
Don't know if she intended this meaning, but it surely could be read this way, don't cha think? Hope no one takes her up on it.

I like this song because it represents me, being a new soul, in a strange world, meaning new places and new people. In life there if joy and fear and for me that is the happiness in life, like getting something new or meeting a new friend; and the fear, meaning getting in trouble or losing a valuable item. The song also says finding trust and love is not always easy to make. " that, I think, represents a lot of people, because you are not sure who to trust or who to love until later in life. Another line in the song states why all this hate. I find that there is some unexpected hate pulsing from people at you, and you want them to communicate, but they don't until you do. -finding myself making every possible mistake. " I think that represents me by I have made a lot of mistakes in life, and if I have learned anything, I will outgrow them in my new soul.

Here's how I see it. Despite the extremely upbeat tempo, I'm thinking this song is actually meant toward her frustration with lack of any type of serenity in our country. I believe that her idea with the melody/beat is meant to inspire. She says give and take, but she is probably to giving, which is where most of the mistakes she sings about come in. I believe that's why see ends by sort of giving a message by saying in my words, Show compassion and love, because as hard as it was for her, and all of her mistakes here, she still shows compassion.

I think its about a women who makes her new home the place she wish she could be a place where she can be free to dream what she wants and to do what she wants a place where you can never make mistakes a place just to be whatever you want and in the end she wants to take you along to this place a place where your dreams are free to fly above the clouds and run through your mind its everything most people want so they don't do something wrong and get hurt by doing its where I wish to go so I can run free through the feilds of flowers :)

This song reminds me of my sister. She abused me physically and emotionally as a child. I always forgave her and tried to establish a relationship with her but one day I realized its not up to me to make that happen. Its been two years since I have spoken to her. We both came into this world not knowing what to expect, I guess I was the better learner. For once in my life I've started to focus on myself and I finally feel some sort of peace. Every time I visit my parents she looks miserable.

God creates a soul. Something that never has and never will be again. Once we are "here" living and breathing, trying to make it in our world of excile this side of eden, we begin to notice our at first pure intentions of learning " how to give and take" as being troubled by this thing we now in-body. This thing that is now called the flesh. It is the flesh that makes us do not those things we originally and most deeply to our core, desire. So live in the flesh we must, and through experiences we learn that yes this is a very paradoxical world. The further we move away from being a young soul, the more we learn how true this is, and hopefully without hardend hearts, we learn how to draw back to the one who created us. Why? Because he is the creator of all happy endings, even if you don't completely as of yet see why some things are so wrong. You can't possibly until you know how true and right he is. But keep making those mistakes! You actually are reaching heaven as the music suggests at the end, (though at times due to our sin the connection becomes a bit staticy!. Also heard in the music? Why? Because these mistakes now made in a reformed older fleshy being holding a soul will be the surest thii g that brings those carefreee teachable la moments into our presence, helping us move out of this very flat and often stra ge world and into a more divine awareness of all things left unseen, both old and new.

Tis song is an uplifting song. It helps me think that when I'm in a negative situation, I can listen to this song and it could brighten my day just like that. I am going to use this song and sing it as a transition song for my chior class because it's one of those songs that will put a smile on a person and give them a light-hearted day: D

I really love this song. I relate a lot to it because of the mistakes I have made in my life but I have found that if I hadn't of made those "mistakes" I would not be the person I am today. They built so much character in me and taught me to rely on God and my instincts. I felt joy and fear in those mistakes I made and I often find myself feeling really out of place because I see things so differently from my family. I just really love this song. I think it means something different to everyone because its going to touch you in a different way than it would touch me. It'll probably mean something different to me in a few years as well. Its just interesting.
    Much love!

I think this song is about being a new soul and making mistakes, but its ok bc in the big schem most of are mistakes are not that great. You learn ("learn a bit bout give and take") from them wich makes you wiser, she felt "joy and fear". I think its just about living and learning, and in the end you are forgiven if you have learned. " bc you dont understand" I love this song I think its about celebrating life, love, and.
Learning. Which if you think about it is pretty wise in its self just realizing it and going with the flow its about the learning you get out of it, and what you make it.

I can see why people might be irritated with this song it has a childish lullaby theme. But the melody and lyrics come together to sum up the human experience in making bad decisions. I love that someone wrote a song about the concept of a new soul. If you are unfamiliar with this, it is based off the Buddhist reincarnation belief that when a person embarks on a new life they have a "new soul" and opposed to "old souls" who have greater self control are more enlightened. She describes the pit falls of the new soul, love, hate, fakness, "every possible mistake" its a great summary of the human condition.

I find the meaning of "new soul" very much like he's a real kid trying to communicate with the world and doesn't quite understand yet, but he learns that not everything is good and not everything is bad, as he says "hoping i could learn a bit 'bout what is true and fake" I think he means the real people who don't have fake everything like fake kids trying to be real when they aren't and he says "but why all this hate? Try to communicate" and my meaning for that is the hatred in the world is tearing everyone apart and he want's everyone to be able to talk to each other without fights or negative thoughts.

Has anyone read "The Host" by Stephenie Meyer? It's a book about a extraterrestial species who are called "souls" who come to earth. Humans are the hosts for the "souls". It's a story about a particular soul who has to come to terms with the world that we have created. I'm not sure if this song inspired the book, or the book inspired the song but the overlap is incredible. The tune is a bit perky for the book, although there are parts of the book where I can envisage the song being played.
